Maori Woman takes up Governor-General Role in New Zealand

Dame Cindy Kiro starts her term as New Zealand’s new Governor-General after a distinguished career in the tertiary education sector with a focus on public health. She is of Ngapuhi, Ngati Hine, Ngati Kahu and British descent. She also has fluency in te reo Maori and is the first Maori woman to be appointed as Governor-General in New Zealand. Dame Cindy was notable for presenting her credentials over Zoom to New Zealand’s (also Australia’s) Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. The appointment leaves only Australia presently – out of Canada, New Zealand and Australia – with both a male and non-Indigenous Head of State representative.
