Republic Setback – WfaAR on the First Anniversary of The Voice Referendum

National Convenor of WfaAR, Sarah Brasch, writes to The Canberra Times to commemorate the first anniversary of The Voice referendum held on 14 October 2023. Here is the text of her letter:

“The failed Voice referendum didn’t just destroy Indigenous people’s hopes. It also hangs heavily over progress on the Republic in the next 10 years. So sad on both counts.

But all is not lost as we immediately contend with “the visit” by our Head of State (King Charles III) to Canberra next week. Merely a rest stop on the way to Samoa to attend CHOGM for Charles and Camilla of course.”

She goes on to briefly list the republican events which will be held in the capital on 21 October (see in detail in post below) and concludes: “This [the visit] comes in the run-up to the 25th anniversary of the Republic referendum on 6 November. How rapidly this has faded from our memories. It was last century.”
