Peter Beattie, Premier of Queensland, has a go at a republican scenario while in London,  commemorating the passing of the Australian Constitution bill by the UK Parliament in 1900. Beattie’s proposal is to experiment with republic options while remaining a monarchy – the Queen would retain the formal role of appointing a State governor on the advice of the premier; this person could be elected or whomever the state parliament chooses after public nominations.
