The House of Representatives passes new wording for the question about the referendum on the republic: “An Act to alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic with the Queen and Governor-General being replaced by a President appointed by two-thirds majority of the members of the Commonwealth Parliament. Do you approve of this proposed law?” This was after the report of an all party committee recommended a change to the question to include mention of the Queen and inclusion of the words “Australian President”; the latter addition of the word “Australian” was rejected by Cabinet.
