25th Anniversary of Republic Referendum

6 November 2024 marked the 25th anniversary of the Republic referendum. It passed almost unnoticed, as if it were too long ago to remember, still controversial so better not recalled or had faded quietly into the background of the 20th century where it should remain as far as the general public is concerned – even with millions of new voters since. Despite WfaAR’s efforts to spark interest, not much eventuated. The Museum of Australian Democracy put out some historical footage and facts on its weekly bulletin but the anniversary was unmarked by the other national institutions. To mark the anniversary, WfaAR spent the afternoon at MOAD viewing the museum’s display on the Republic referendum providing some good reminders of the debates for and against, the personalities and an interesting collection of memorabilia including the green and gold YES T shirts. Sincere thanks to MOAD.
