Dr Marion Maddox, Director of the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion at Macquarie University delivers a lecture on “The Exclusive Inclusive Republic” at the ANU in Canberra. She says the republic question is fundamentally about power but notes that discussions at ConCon in 1998 retained a place in the Constitution for a higher authority than the head of state, a ‘generic god’. In the space leading up to the next Republic debate, she argues it’s time for the framers of a cosmopolitan Australian Republic to look beyond 18th century anti-monarchism and anti-clericalism to a global ethos with its own economic, legal, cultural and environmental imperatives.
