Ex-astronaut Julie Payette is appointed as Canada’s next Governor-General, the fourth woman to represent the Queen of Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the recommendation to the Queen, who approved it, bypassing the selection panel put in place by his conservative predecessor, Stephen Harper.
