Should it deal with unfinished business or is it a beginning?&#8221;\u00a0 Professor Mick Dodson speaks at a\u00a0 Senate Occasional Lecture in Canberra\u00a0about the Indigenous recognition referendum due in 2013.\u00a0 Commenting on the proposal for a values statement to be included in the Constitution at the same time, Professor Dodson said this\u00a0referendum should concentrate on only one issue &#8211; and not be held in conjunction with a federal election.\u00a0 The values statement, he\u00a0thinks,\u00a0should be\u00a0put aside\u00a0until we vote on &#8220;an inclusive republic with a new constitution&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Why are we doing this?
