{"id":1818,"date":"2011-07-21T18:36:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T08:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womenrep.org\/?p=1818"},"modified":"2023-08-30T19:26:34","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T09:26:34","slug":"arms-20th-anniversary-and-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womenrep.org\/?p=1818","title":{"rendered":"ARM&#8217;s 20th Anniversary and Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commemoration of the Australian Republican Movement&#8217;s 20th anniversary gives WfaAR cause for pause\u00a0about the few &#8211;\u00a0and\u00a0declining &#8211;\u00a0numbers of women involved in ARM decision-making over its history.\u00a0 The 14\u00a0foundation members\u00a0of 9\u00a0July 1991 included: Jenny Kee; Franca Arena; Faith Bandler and Geraldine Doogue.\u00a0 The ARM\u00a0group at the 1998 Constitutional Convention\u00a0filled 27 of the 76 elected positions among them 14 women probably due to ARM&#8217;s policy of alternating gender on ballot papers: Wendy Machin,\u00a0Karin Sowada, Jennie George and Hazel Hawke (NSW); Mary Delahunty and Poppy King (Vic); Linda Kirk and Kirsten Andrews (SA); Sallyanne Atkinson and Sarina Russo (Qld); Janet Holmes a Court and Clare Thompson (WA); Marguerite Scott (Tas) and Anne Witheford (ACT). ARM&#8217;s sole female representative of three\u00a0on the 1999 YES Committee was former NSW\u00a0Democrats Senator,\u00a0Karin Sowada. On the first post referendum National Committee, women were represented by Wendy Machin, one of six members, but things changed when the first National Committee was elected in 2000.\u00a0\u00a0Women jumped to\u00a0five members out of 16: Natasha Stott Despoja; Louise Sullivan; Anne Witheford; Dorothy McCrae-McMahon and Susan Ryan. In 2011, ARM&#8217;s National Council is down to one woman: Lyn Petrie who is one of\u00a0the Vice Presidents and ex officio as she is the Convenor of ARM SA.
