Before the 2010 election, Labor foreshadowed three referendums: the Republic,\u00a0recognition of Indigenous peoples and local government. Although attempts to get the Indigenous recognition referendum up\u00a0failed due to lack of government leadership\u00a0along with\u00a0a\u00a0solid dose of\u00a0racism and resentment\u00a0among voters, the Republic trails a very distant last and is the only topic to have received no attention during the term of this Government.\u00a0That will be a haunting legacy of missed opportunity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Government announces a referendum on recognition of local government in the Constitution to be\u00a0held\u00a0on the same day as the\u00a0federal election on 14 September.
