{"id":1562,"date":"2013-01-22T09:01:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T23:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womenrep.org\/?p=1562"},"modified":"2023-08-30T09:02:28","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T23:02:28","slug":"new-uk-succession-law-faces-hurdles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womenrep.org\/?p=1562","title":{"rendered":"New UK Succession Law Faces Hurdles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new UK\u00a0law\u00a0changing\u00a0the gender rule for royal succession\u00a0was introduced into the House of Commons for fast-tracking through both Houses\u00a0on 13 December 2012.\u00a0 The Lords Constitution Committee cautions against speedy passage of the legislation saying that the\u00a0issues raised\u00a0require\u00a0detailed\u00a0consideration because of their complexity and the possibility of unintended consequences\u00a0as a\u00a0number of ancient\u00a0laws\u00a0will need to be amended,\u00a0including\u00a0one that was originally drafted in Norman French.\u00a0 However, the contentious\u00a0issues\u00a0relate to the provisions that enable the monarch\u00a0to marry a Catholic rather than those that change the order of succession giving female and male children equal rights to the throne regardless of birth order.
