{"id":1462,"date":"2014-06-02T21:58:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T11:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womenrep.org\/?p=1462"},"modified":"2023-08-29T21:59:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T11:59:09","slug":"king-of-spain-abdicates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womenrep.org\/?p=1462","title":{"rendered":"King of Spain abdicates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Juan Carlos of Spain, increasingly unpopular, has abdicated at 78.\u00a0This was unexpected.\u00a0Under the 1978 Constitution, both the abdication and the succession of Prince Felipe\u00a0must be approved by the Spanish Parliament.\u00a0The announcement led to large anti-monarchy, pro-republic\u00a0protests in the streets.\u00a0This is the second abdication in Europe this year after Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands followed tradition on turning 70 at the\u00a0end of April\u00a0and handed over to her son, Prince Willem-Alexander. On the subject of\u00a0abdication, the Queen of the United Kingdom, also\u00a0monarch of 15 other realms including Australia, commented &#8220;It&#8217;s not something\u00a0that we do here&#8221;.
