The PM said six when in fact it already has seven &#8211; one for each State and one\u00a0added for\u00a0the combined territories of the Commonwealth in 1909. This got into the\u00a0media following a Premiers &#8216; retreat ahead of a COAG meeting with one\u00a0unexpected outcome being a plan\u00a0for Northern Territory statehood\u00a0by 2018. If this goes through &#8211; the\u00a0NT already tried\u00a0in 1998\u00a0but\u00a0failed &#8211; it will be of\u00a0keen interest to referendum watchers like republicans because it will be easier to get proposed constitutional changes\u00a0up in four States out of\u00a0seven.
