Margaret started by asking him about the Abbott knighthoods introduced last year. Hawke replied that the measure of their worth was that even John Howard thought they were a bad idea. Then he said that he had suggested to the previous Labor Government that they\u00a0hold a vote\u00a0for the Republic to come into effect as soon as the Queen died but they had squibbed it. At least it\u00a0is a\u00a0new idea\u00a0(one worth pursuing\u00a0even if the grounds for it\u00a0are\u00a0shaky and deferential: no one wants to offend the Queen, that&#8217;s sexist)\u00a0and a shift for Hawke who had previously advocated for no change until the Queen dies but now proposes some action to go with it, that is\u00a0to be ready to\u00a0put it in place\u00a0before Charles formally takes\u00a0the throne.
