An exhibition of watercolours by Prince Charles opens at the NGA.\u00a0His selection of 30 works from 2002 to 2016 spans the globe from scenes in the gardens of the royal estates in the UK, to\u00a0landscapes in the Swiss mountains\u00a0completed while on holidays\u00a0to evening\u00a0daubing sessions on\u00a0tours to Africa. Ominous\u00a0skies in\u00a0deep\u00a0shades of grey are a striking common\u00a0feature.\u00a0Each one is signed lightly\u00a0in graphite\u00a0with a single C\u00a0and the year underneath.The prince has had years of practice, the\u00a0best\u00a0tutors and\u00a0plenty of time to paint but he is a capable\u00a0watercolourist, a fiendishly difficult medium. The accompanying video tells us much: he is diffident about his “talent” to the point of\u00a0disconcerting humility on both his part and ours. Charles\u00a0also comments that many organisations have requested to show his work but only the NGA’s request has been agreed to.\u00a0 Did we ask\u00a0to show these works\u00a0or did the Palace ask us to? (they are in a dimly lit corridor off the beaten\u00a0track near the first floor\u00a0toilets).\u00a0Billed as an exhibition to celebrate his 70th birthday, WfaAR was left pondering why only\u00a0a request from a national gallery – and an Australian one at that – was acceded to?
